Beaded Knitted Bag - Tarot Bag

beaded knitted bag

My local Bead Society, the Upper Midwest Bead Society (UMBS) sponsored a bead challenge in Spring 2001. I paid $10 for a set of beads that weren't really very attractive together. Bead Challenge participants were told to use at least 50% of each package of beads. I knew I would have to add other beads to create something that I thought would be attractive. I had it in my head to make something that I could use so I chose to make a bag for one of my Tarot card decks. I used a very simple rectangular pattern and quickly realized that doing both the front and back with beaded knitting would make a very heavy piece. So I stopped when I had what I thought would be a good size, finished off my knitting and then sewed it to a piece of velvet-like fabric. I used the larger sized beads for a two layer fringe and added a purchased cord with a tasseled end for a knotted closure - easy, right?...okay, now I am going to let you in on a little secret...I waited until the very last minute and worked feverishly one weekend before the cutoff date. I skipped my bead society board meeting so I could finish the dang thing. But I did get it to the regular meeting so I could turn it in. Guess what? I was one of the 11 finalists! If you would like to see the other fantastic entries, click here and be sure to visit the 2nd page. There is a very badly colored scan of my bag there too.
